Japan silk mill closer to World Heritage status
An advisory body to UNESCO has recommended a 19th-century silk mill near Tokyo be given World Cultural Heritage status.
The Japanese government approached UNESCO in January last year with a recommendation to consider the Tomioka Silk Mill and related sites in Gunma Prefecture.
The mill was built in 1872 as Japan's first state-run silk factory. Officials said it developed innovative silk technology and greatly contributed to the growth of the global silk industry.
Members of the International Council on Monuments and Sites inspected the site last September.
Their recommendation will likely have a great influence on the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Analysts expect committee members to approve it when they meet in Qatar this June.
